Top of the list of things to do was fishing. Uncle Paulie told Maddox that to catch fish, he better go out early. So, before sunrise on our first morning, Maddox crawled into our side of the tent and very nicely woke Tyler up and asked to go fishing. Here's what I found when I stumbled out to the dock about an hour later. The lake was beautiful, covered in mist and flat as a mirror. But, alas, no fish were caught, so we had pancakes for breakfast instead.
Next up was dirt bike riding. In addition to a beautiful, quiet campground with a perfect lake, the location we chose happened to be about four miles away from an OHV park - dirt bike paradise. Here's Tyler, showing off his jumping skills.
And, Maddox taking a rest on the back of the quad. He rode for most of the first morning, but then had trouble with his bike, so hitched a ride with Tyler or I for the rest of the time. When he did ride, he did awesome - picking his lines and going over new terrain like a pro.
And Glen, in his element. When Maddox was riding, we stuck to the easy trails, but when he was with Tyler or I, we were able to hit the intermediate trails. Glen did so well - the harder trails had some fun hills, more rocks, and ruts in the trails - he was incredible, and didn't crash once. The OHV park was absolutely gorgeous - with manicured trails in the pine forest with hills, trees, meadows, small streams, deer, and other wildlife - really a treat.
Glen said that this birthday was "the best day of my life." I have to admit, it was a really fun day!
Both boys loved camping - they are really into survival stuff, and had a great time helping to make a fire - without using matches or paper! - gathering wood, and playing in the woods around our campsite. They also rode bikes a lot, went fishing (but, alas, didn't go "catching"), and ate tons of campfire food. Mmmmmm.... Maddox's favorite was s'mores (big surprise).
Since we had so much fun at the OHV park, we decided to go again, and found a forest service road that went to the back side of the park right from our campsite. Bliss! We had fun exploring the other side of the park, and found the prettiest meadow filled with wildflowers (and, in this picture, very dirty boys!). It smelled divine too (the flowers, not the boys). We also found a trail that we dubbed "butterfly trail" because there were literally thousands and thousands of butterflies - we rode for several minutes through a huge cloud of butterflies - it was really cool (and a little annoying when they flew in your helmet).
Back at camp again, the boys had fun exploring. They had bigger "boundaries" this year, and took full advantage. Here's Glen with some "old man's beard" - a type of moss that you can use as tinder for fires. I think he picked every strand within reach inside his boundaries. Needless to say, our campfire did not lack tinder. Or entertainment. We had a great time, and can't wait to go again!
