Big

Have you ever squatted down to kid-height and looked at a horse? They're big. And if you've ever done so next to Ozzy - he's REALLY big. Seriously, his head is about as big as Maddox is tall.
In spite of (or because of) their size, both my boys are completely fearless around my horses. Glen loves to pick long grass or dandelions to feed them - roots and all - and Maddox loves to pet them and play with thier ears ("Funny!"). Both enjoy riding - I think they like the way the view of the world changes from the perspective of a horse's back. Me too.
And Glen is getting quite good at handling Chiron from the ground - he loves it when I put a halter on her and let him lead her all over the property. He shows her his trails, takes her to the water trough, and generally bosses her around. Must feel pretty powerful to be in charge of such a big animal when you are four (and three quarters).
And the horses love the boys - very politely taking the "treats" they offer - roots and all. Giving them rides, and generally putting up with the petting, patting, ear stroking, loud noises and bossiness that comes with little boys.
